Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Earth Pan II is brought to you by the Meyer folks. After moving on from Starfrit, I am glad to report this "SandFlow" non-stick performs almost like conventional Teflon. As usual, I am skeptical about claims of Eco-friendliness (probably driven by the 33% reduction in energy required to cure the surface). But the 600°F oven rating is impressive since some pans don't even specify a maximum temperature rating. If the temperature at which the coating disintegrates is that much higher than my everyday cooking range, then that's added peace of mind for me.
The 8" is a great size for scrambling 2-3 eggs, although it seems to take forever to brown anything. The coating is a fairly slick light gray (as opposed to the rougher non-stick you get from, say, Calphalon), and shows no signs of wear and tear after a month of gentle use and hand washing.
Those of you who don't like heft will appreciate its light weight. It has a very nicely sculpted handle fastened by rivets, but I do wish manufacturers would get past the nostalgia of protruding rivets and give me something that is flush--inside and outside--so it is easier to clean. After all, hand washing is recommended.
So far, it seems to be a quality product with superb fit and finish--and a joy to use.
NINE MONTH UPDATE:
The non-stick is now about 70% as effective as it was on day one (I feel this happens with teflon non-stick pans too). I figured out that if I preheat the pan first, sausages brown really nicely. I think this is what the pan is best suited for--frying at high temperatures where teflon has the risk of breaking down and becoming carcinogenic. Clean up is effortless. Eggs are a different matter. I catch myself using a little more oil than usual. Fried eggs stick, and flipping them for 'over easy' often leads to broken yokes. Scrambling eggs can result in a layer of egg being left behind (see photo), but I find that if I keep moving the egg around, I can significantly reduce this. For some reason, if I cook another batch, the previously stuck egg actually releases itself from the pan. I can clean off most of what's left with a nylon brush. I've found it's easiest to clean when you let the scrambled egg dry to a crisp--then it pretty much just flakes off. A little finger nail action removes the remainder. The non-stick surface still looks good as new. 4 stars.

Product Description:
Get serious about your cooking and your green credentials with this 12-inch hard-anodized skillet from Farberware's Earth Pan II line. Harder than stainless steel, the cookware's hard-anodized exterior is dense, nonporous, and highly wear-resistant for extra durability and professional performance, as well as quick and even heat distribution to help reduce hot spots. Oven-safe up to 600 degrees F, its dual riveted stainless-steel handle offers a comfortable, confident grip. Earth Pan cookware works on all cooking surfaces, except for induction cookers.
The foundation of all Earth Pan cookware is the unique SandFlow nonstick coating that originates from sand--used to manufacture kitchenware like glass and silicone bakeware. Just like the nonstick pans you've used over the years, Earth Pan cookware is formulated to provide excellent food release without use of cooking oils, and the pans are easy to clean. Based on industry lab tests, SandFlow nonstick surfaces are three times more durable than ceramic-based surfaces and they require 33-percent less energy to cure than traditional nonstick pans.
The SandFlow coating does not contain PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene, also known as the brand name Teflon) or PFOA (a key processing agent in making nonstick and stain-resistant materials, including Teflon)--both of which have raised health concerns in recent years. Laboratory animals exposed to high doses of PFOA suffered cancer, low birth weight, and a suppressed immune system, though PTFE-manufactured nonstick cookware is considered an insignificant exposure source of PFOA.
This skillet is dishwasher safe, though handwashing is recommended to ensure longevity. Metal utensils and abrasive cleaners or brushes should be avoided. Earth Pan's packaging material and inserts are made from at least 50-percent recycled fiber with all materials being 100-percent recyclable.
