(More customer reviews)We got this griddle for our anniversary three months ago, and so far we love it.The plates come out for easy cleaning in the dishwasher, and the folding makes for pretty easy storage.Our only complaints are about how bulky it is even when folded and the crease in the middle doesn't allow for very big pancakes.But even cooking and perfect pancakes make up for that!

(More customer reviews)This unit just isn't very good.It doesn't cook things evenly.If I put anything (pancakes, french toast, bacon, etc...) in the center of the unit, the food always cooks unevenly.For example, a pancake will get a brown stripe down the middle but the edges remain white.Same with french toast.And there is about a two inch spot all around the entire cooking surface that is much cooler than the rest of the griddle.So you're forced to cram everything into the center or risk half your item coming out raw.To top it off, the literature that comes with the griddle tells you to set it at certain temperatures for different foods (375 degrees for bacon, 375 for french toast, 350 for pancakes, 325 for ham slices, 400 for steaks, etc...), but the temperature control unit settings are listed as #1 thru #5.You'd think that maybe each number represents a temperature setting.But they only list 4 different cooking temperature levels in the manual while they have 5 different numbers on the control.How the heck are you supposed to know what number equals 375 degrees?Very poor design.

I don't care how much money you have to spend on a griddle.Whatever you do, just don't spend it on this one.

Grilling requires copious patient minutes, and the underslung heating for Raclette will just take the cheese from room temperature to somewhat glazed consistency. To produce a little crust on the cheese either takes longer than 20 minutes, or will never happen. The light brown baked surface on the top of the cheese really brings out the flavor. I tried this oven with authentic imported Raclette and with America Monterey Jack. It will melt the cheese enough to get it to flow, but that's after considerable time. Hope you like your guests, because there'll be plenty of chatting while you wait.

Have purchased other double burner griddles and they didn't fit my stove because the handles were in the way. The handles on this griddle are molded, low profile and don't get in the way. The defrost feature is great. I start the defrost in my microwave and finsh on the griddle. No cooked spots on the meat and the defrost time is incredibly short. Great product. Originally, raclette was mountain cheese held near a fire and the melted part of the block scraped off onto a plate with potatoes and gherkins. Now, it's a fancy grill used for parties with trays beneath a heating element to melt cheese, and a grill on top of the element to cook sausages, shrimp, meats, veggies, pineapple, and even crepes. This raclette grill has some notable advantages:

1. It's oval, meaning it will work on a round table as people can access their melting trays from all sides.

2. It has a pancake and grill portion on the top grill.

3. It's very affordable.

If you want stone and not teflon, this isn't the one you want, but considering its advantages and that it is a great price for what might be only a party appliance, you can't go wrong. For round tables, it's a must.

It has a slight raised lip running around the outside edge which contains any batters, grease, or other liquids which might run over the edge and create a mess; the grease drain is only on the front edge and is treated with the same sturdy non-stick coating as the rest of the surface, making for easy clean up. Indeed, the lack of plastic attachments make cleanup easy, and I really like the simple design, a very large cooking surface, two plastic handles and a removable plastic grease catch.

The only thing keeping me from rating it a five out of five is that I would have liked to see a thicker aluminum used, the base is only about 2mm thick, though I've been unable to find anything thicker

(More customer reviews)It's heavy and dead-flat.What can you say about a griddle except that it does exactly what you wish a griddle would do.There are no hot-spots, and the handle stays cool.(The Calphalon Contemporary handles are big, and may get in the way occasionally -- but they stay very cool.)
One thing, though -- the non-stick surface is *really* non stick.Make an omlette and it'll spread over just about the whole bottom of the pan in no-time-flat -- which is just great, so long as you like really thin omlettes.Over-easy eggs can be a bit tricky because it's so slippery -- it's not that easy to get the spatula underneath! (Part of that's because plastic and coated spatulas are thicker than metal ones.)One time I almost pushed an egg right off the griddle and onto the stovetop.But anyone who's ever had something stick to a griddle will not complain that nothing can stick.
Cleanup is strange.It just doesn't get dirty.I've only had this awhile, but I've used it twenty times, and the nonstick is not only still in perfect condition, it doesn't even show the "bright spots" that, with high-quality non-stick cookware, indicates some mechanical burnishing.I think this will last forever.

At first, I wasn't sure that I wanted a cast iron griddle.They are HEAVY and not dishwasher safe . . . so I tried a few nonstick brands first --top dollar brands with high ratings.

I hated them.The nonstick surface was inferior.On a reversible griddle, the underside became sticky and difficult to clean.The heat was distributed unevenly.One claimed to be dishwasher safe, yet when I put it in the dishwasher, some of the nonstick surface came off.

I am extremely health conscious, and I use very little oil when I cook.Food often stuck to the "non-stick" surface -- go figure.

I wanted to find a great griddle that I could use for many things, including cooking like the chefs in Japanese Steak Houses -- I dreamed of using a small dash of my favorite oil and flinging shrimp, chicken and veggies on the griddle like a pro.No, I didn't think I could toss my tools in the air or catch the shrimp in my pocket . . . I just wanted the flavor and the ease of cooking.

By this time, I was on a quest, and the non-stick stuff just wasn't cutting it.I did a little research, and I learned that pros recommend the Lodge griddle, so despite my apprehension, I thought I'd give it a try.

Wow!The pre-seasoned surface is perfect and better than any non-stick surface I have ever used.Just a tiny bit of non-stick spray is all I need, and everything from pancakes to eggs flip with ease.Grilling Japanese style works perfectly.

On the grill side: whole steaks, chicken, fish -- fabulous, fast, and everything has those beautiful grill lines.Nice for grilled vegetables, too.

The griddle is indeed heavy, but it's okay.I wouldn't recommend lifting it if you have serious muscle or joint problems, and I wouldn't want to drop it on my foot, but otherwise, go for it.I'm a softie, and if I can handle it, so can you.

As for not being able to put the griddle in the dishwasher:I don't believe I'm going to say this, but I don't care about having to handwash it.The griddle cleans so easily, a few swipes and I'm done.If I forget to clean it and wake up to it the next morning (okay, so I'm not Suzy Homemaker), I just lay it straight across the top of my sink -- not IN the sink, but rather, balanced from edge to edge, on top . . . and I run a little water over it, let it set for a few minutes, and it'seasy to clean.

A word of advice:Just as it says in the instructions, you need to clean the griddle without soap (water only) to preserve the pre-seasoned finish.However, should you want to use soap, you can.There are instructions included in how to re-season the griddle -- it's easy.

I frankly didn't like the idea of not cleaning with soap.I didn't feel as though the germs were destroyed . . . but soap doesn't really kill germs, it merely works as a surfactant that makes water wetter so things become easier to clean.

If you want to kill germs, heat is one of the best ways to do it.Every time you use the griddle, you preheat it on the range for about five minutes or so -- you're killing far more germs than if you had used soap!

You can also rub your griddle with a very light coating of oil, stick it in a hot oven and disinfect it that way (this is also similar to how you reseason it).

This is one of the easiest, most wonderful kitchen tools I own.It is a breeze to use, I feel like a pro flipping all that food around.Everything comes out great, and it is very easy to use, and food does not stick.

I have since added six more pieces of cast iron to my collection, one triangle cornbread/scone, a round muffin/biscuit, and four cast iron skillets.Two of the skillets are antique -- talk about well-seasoned! I do not use the bread/muffin bakers as much as I thought I would, but I use the skillets almost every day.I love them.

PS:I remember reading somewhere that using cast iron also adds iron to your diet.A nice extra, yes?

(More customer reviews)i've had this for only a couple months and this grill is HORRIBLE headache and as soon as i can afford to replace it its going in the trash. i should have stayed with presto. i had 2 of thier grills that i used constantly until the non stick surface was worn out and each of them lasted over a year and a half before that happened. but they always heated evenly.never did i have the problems with them and especially when i've only had it a couple months and its surfaces looks worse than either of them..not only do i have to put everything on 400 degrees to get any sort of heat. it does not cook evenly the entire center of the grill won't get hot enough to grilland the heat sensor will not only NOT turn on without jiggling it countless times when it DOES finally heat up it wont stay hot and turns off mid cooking my food and i have to rejiggle the element to get it to RE turn on.. i also wish i would have read these reviews before purchasing, i was going to get a presto but this one had a cheap price so i got it instead cause i was trying to get a good deal.. big mistake!!!awaiting the day i can throw this horrible waste of money away.. the heating surface IS large and i like the warming basket.. it does work well.. but that is it..

(More customer reviews)I bought this griddle to replace a non-stick one that we have owned for years. My husband had heard so many things about the dangers of the chemical coatings entering food that he really wanted us to get rid of all our pots and pans and go to something "safer".

I had to admit that all my "coated" pans had deteriorated and been replaced many times because the coating just does not last....So, we decided to try stainless steel, even though my prior experiences with it years ago had meant sticky surfaces, uneven cooking and hard to clean.

The CHEF'S SECRET is a great, heavy-duty stainless griddle that is actually easy to clean (with a brillo or scrubber) and it cooks even better than the pans I have used in the past, including the non-sticks. You do have to have a good coating before cooking to avoid sticking, but we like olive oil and that seems to work well in addition to being good for you.

It has a nice heft to it and solid construction and I love having a lid available, particularly a glass one to keep an eye on the food.

I HIGHLY recommend this griddle for its abilities, construction and style!

The bottom portion is great for breakfast foods like pancakes and eggs. The top portion is even better for cooking a variety of foods, including sautéing onions and vegetables and browning meats. The skillet section also doubles as a serving dish that makes it much easier to keep food warm at the table. The variable heat setting also give you great control over the cooking times.I highly recommend the skillet griddle.

But when I got this Griddle I started turning out perfect pancakes every time! There must be something about iron.I've never had any iron cookware before.And the size is just small enough so it's not too heavy, but the flatness allows me to make a "short stack" of pancakes all at once.

This is the most joy that $12.00 has brough into my life in a long time.And, I'll save a ton of money over the rest of my life not going to restaurants to get pancakes!!
